Santa Barbara's Moreton Bay Fig Tree at the corner of

Montecito and Chapala is believed to be the largest of its type

(ficus macrophylla) in the US. Planted as a seedling in 1876, it

was transplanted the following year to its current location. The

tree was officially designated as a historic landmark in 1970 and

has been placed on the California Register of Big Trees.
